NEW TO YOGA?

WelcOMe! We are truly honored and blessed to offer the opportunity for you to practice yoga with us. Here are a few tips for new students:

Try to arrive at least 10-15 minutes prior to class to fill out a little paper work. This also allows time to discuss with your teacher any injuries or medical conditions.

Wear comfortable exercise clothes. Yoga pants, tights, sweatpants, t-shirts and tank-tops are all appropriate.  We practice in our bare feet.

Try not to eat, or eat light prior to class. Practicing yoga right after a heavy meal will hinder your body. The body needs to be able to twist and move into poses, and this is difficult if the body is digesting heavy food. Stay hydrated during and after class.  Feel free to bring a water bottle with you.

Bring your own yoga mat if you prefer, but we will have extra mats if needed. We also have props available to assist into certain asanas(poses). All available at no extra charge.

Release the tension. Clenching your fingers, toes, or even your jaw is very common when you’re first starting out. The more you let go and release this stress from your body, the easier every pose will feel. Keeping things loose and comfortable will allow for a better experience, and once you’ve chilled out, you’ll find that you’re able to hold poses for longer.

Breath is everything. Pay attention to the shallowness of your breath at the beginning of class, and at the end of class notice if your breath has deepened and you are more relaxed. When you feel your mind wander, think about lengthening your inhales and exhales. It’s the best way to calm down and dive back into your practice with a fresh outlook.

Be compassionate with yourself as you learn about yourself and your body in a new way.  Feel free to look around the room for guidance as you learn new asana, but please don’t compare.

If at any point during class you feel uncomfortable, please sit or rest in child’s pose.  Trust your body and understand that yoga is an individual practice.
